In Rome (Italy), the members’ meetings of DanceSport Europe (DSE), the WDSF Professional Division (WDSF-PD) and the WDSF took place in June. From Thursday to Monday, there were numerous meetings of the Commissions and the Managing Committees.
In her role as DSE vice president, Heidi Estler had to take over the leadership of the DSE assembly, because President Luis Vano had canceled on notice for private reasons. Estler quickly passed through the agenda, the annual and cash reports were accepted and the Managing Committee was relieved.
The first DanceSport Europe European Universities Championship in Standard and Latin was held 11.9.2016 in Bratislava as a part of Slovak Open Championship, an official event of the European Week of Sport. In total 44 couples from 10 countries, individually representing 43 universities or the last grade of a secondary school participated. Eva Bartunkova, the general secretary of DSE in her opening speech welcomed all the participants and thanked the organizers, Slovak Dance Sport Federation and Slovak University Sport Association, among them the sponsors and partners Valery Lebedev – EurodanceLux providing the trophies and medals for this championship as well as a special trophy by DSE for the pilot project Grand Prix for Children scheduled on the day. Gaudeamus Igitur, the anthem of students then opened the event.
The title of DSE European Universities Champions in Standard dances went to Tomas Fainsil and Violetta Posmetnaya representing Lithuanian Sport University, Lithuania, followed by the silver medallists Matej Stec (Technical University Kosice) – Elena Popova (UK Bratislava) from Slovakia and Klemens Hofer (University Wien) – Barbara Westermayer (Academy of Fine Arts) from Austria in third place.
DSE European Universities Latin Champions became Radim Vyslouzil (VSB – TUO Ostrava) – Tereza Sedlakova (Gymnasium Kromeriz) from the Czech Republic, second place went to Joris Sangavicius – Ieva Urbonaite (Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences), Lithuania. Bronze medal in Latin for Matej Stec and Elena Popova from Slovakia. Together with the second place in Standard made this couple as the most universal couple winning also a special trophy for the combination by DSE.

We would like to invite you warmly one more time to the DSE European Universities Championship STT and LAT held in Bratislava 11.9.2016. The DSE event is being a part of Slovak Open Championship containing also other WDSF competitions. Invitation letter has already been distributed by the organizer – Slovak Dance Sport Federation, you can find detailed information, conditions for participation at www.soch.sk.
Just briefly, both dancers must be students, age limit is 28, dancers of all classes and pre-classes may participate, competitors represent their University (not country), high-school students who graduate in the school year 2016/2017 are allowed to participate as well.
University sport is one of the main areas of interest of DSE and we trust that you and your dancing students will support this event and that the university DanceSport will grow all over the Europe.
Secondly we would like to draw your attention to the second addition of the European Week Of Sport, 10.-16.9.2016, organized by EU Commission. As you can see the date corresponds with the date of the Slovak Open and DSE European Universities Championship which became an official events of the European Week Of Sport. Importance of the event is being underlined by the Slovak Presidency of the Council of EU since July 2016. The official opening event of the European Week of Sport and “kick-off” by the EU Commissioner Navracsics will be held in Kosice, Slovakia on the 10th of September.
DSE strongly supports activities of EU office and recommends the member bodies to contact their National Olympic Committees if they have not done it by now about the European Week of Sports. We would like to ask you to monitor the events in your country and around and we will be happy to share your experience. With your help and participation DSE would like to establish an active role in Europe and support activities of EU Office such as the European Week of Sports for future.

Vice President of DanceSport Europe (DSE) Heidi Estler had to take the leadership of the DSE Annual General Meeting because President Luis Vaño had canceled for personal reasons shortly. She went swiftly through the agenda, the annual and financial reports were adopted unanimously. The delegates approved unanimously the work of the Managing Committee.
